I have been marketing online for a couple of years now, on and off. The way I do things is very likely to be the same as 90% of other affiliate marketers online. You know how it goes, you research a niche, you find a product, then you do some more research on the competition and keywords, then you have to get traffic, and hope for conversions.
Now, that’s a very basic outline of some of the steps involved as an affiliate marketer. If the truth be told, there are a lot more involved, areas you may need to focus on also include: Do you build your own landing page, or maybe you’ll direct link to an offer? Have you got analytics and conversion tracking set up? How are you going to drive traffic i.e. Search Engine Optimization (SEO), PPC or Web 2.0 social traffic, or a combination of these, etc.
I don’t want to go into too much detail about setting up affiliate campaigns, that’s a whole separate ball game, and not why I wrote this article. What I did want to converse is how an affiliate marketer takes the next step-up to developing his/her own products. As I said before, I have had moderate success as an affiliate marketer, but it seems to me, there is more money to be made as a vendor. Please don’t take me the wrong way, I love affiliate marketing and think its is one of, if not, the best place for beginner marketers to cut their teeth.
If you take a look at the guru’s of Internet marketing, they all have one thing in common… They create their own products. Many of these “guru’s” are seen as leaders or authority figures within there chosen market, and people tend to treat them accordingly. This is where it’s at, by developing and creating your own product/products you can position yourself as an authority figure in your market place.
When you think about it, there is a lot of competition between affiliates, so there can be occasions when a product is flooding the market place. If you look at Clickbank, it’s often one of the first affiliate sites you sign up for. We all know how many “Clickbank Success Guides” there are out there, you can just imagine how many affiliates are signing up everyday.
Imagine you have just created your own product and you have just placed it on Clickbank. Now through potential exposure, (hopefully) you will now get a flood of affiliate marketers signing up to promote your product. Can you see what I’m getting at here? Serious potential right? So create an awesome product and then get hundreds of affiliates to sell it for you, WOW! The creation of just one of these products can literally generate a steady stream of income for many years to follow, many of big named marketers are still making money from affiliates selling their products from years ago.
So it’s clear to me, in order to end the 9 to 5 rat race, and really kick this Internet marketing into the next gear, one of your best chances is to have your own product. Yes, easier said than done, but with enough experience, knowledge and the confidence to be able to back yourself you can move from an affiliate mind-set to one of a product developer/creator.
