They're asking for a fee in order for you to join? That sounds a bit like a scam to me. Mystery shopping isn't a steady job, so you may pay $20, but only get maybe 4-5 jobs throughout the year & earn only $15-40. My personal experience with a mystery shopping job was that I didn't have to pay anything, but I didn't get hired that often (since I lived in a small town).

I didn't really have to pay taxes, but then I'd only earned about $10. I did have to pay if I went to a location that I had to pay to be there (like a restaraunt or a shop), but I got reimbursed for that amount as long as I kept the reciept & sent it in. I think that you need to pass over this company. You shouldn't have to pay--THEY should be paying YOU. What if they say "gee, sorry, but there's no jobs in your area" or if there's no jobs that you can take? Then you're out $20.

EDIT:

Only pay if you are looking to find a site that is going to list various secret shopper sites. Even then, don't pay too much for it.

Also, don't buy into the "earn up to $5,000 a month" stuff. The likelihood of that occuring immediately is very slim. Usually the only people who earn that much are the professional ones that have been around for a long time & know how to work the system. Odds are that you will not earn that much at first, and not enough to pay your bills & stuff.

Just be careful about it. Secret shopping can be very fun (I had a blast doing mine), but there are lots of unscrupulous people out there.

Avoid those that asks for a fee to give you a job as those are typically scams

There are indeed a lot of scams in terms of mystery shopping jobs. But mystery shopping is a legitimate market research tool used by big companies to evaluate the quality of their services.

I suggest you go to the National Mystery Shopping Providers Association (MSPA) http://www.mysteryshop.org , an organization of mystery shopping companies. This is the organization that you can TRUST in this field

Check out their listing of shopping assignments by country and by state from member companies. Companies are accepted as members of the association only if they have been in existence for two years and they can submit proof of business existence. Make a list of these companies and check out their requirements to be a mystery shopper.

The MSPA North America has a job board listing available mystery shoppers position

http://www.jobslinger.com/mspa/exec/sfs/jobboard

If in doubt, double-check the company with the local Better Business Bureau http://www.bbb.org , usually under the Service Intelligence category. Find out if any complaints have been lodged with the mystery shopping company, before agreeing to do work for them.
