There are a few legitimate data entry companies but are not hiring and have large waiting lists (1-2yrs). The majority of data entry jobs you seen online are scams. A real company will want you to have skills inc fast typing, may want you to know MS Excel, and will usually ask that you have high speed internet. Once in a long while you may found one online on a job website but thats rare.
If you do an advanced search on yahoo, you will find previous answers, sometimes the info on these is good as the info they gave is likely to have been verified if the answer was voted as ‘Best’.

Lots of people work at home and make decent money. Most of these do work at home that they formerly did in an office, often for the same employer – I know four people who do that. Others run their own businesses from home – I know two people who do that.
If you are asking about the "jobs" you find on the Internet, they’re pretty much all scams. You’ll probably get answers here from people touting some website – look at how long they’ve been on Answers, and be especially aware of anyone who just signed up in the last day or two. If they just signed up today or yesterday, it’s probably because Yahoo booted them off earlier for spam.

although there are companies who will pay you to work from home, many of them require on the job training first at their facility. Some ones to consider include Jet Blue airlines and O’corrunce teleservices.
However, really the best way to work from home is to start your own business and yes you will have costs. That is a part of a business.

What you’re asking just isn’t feasible. If there were jobs out there where you could work at home with absolutely no cost to yourself wouldn’t everybody be doing it?
From what I’ve seen of the likes of which you’re asking, jobs like these involve far more work and time than the revenue accounts for.
You can’t expect something for nothing. Anyone who tells you otherwise is planning for something later…
